Richard Wells was probably one of the two men of that name who came to Virginia in 1635, (Hotten) Sept 27, 1637 he patented 50 acres for his personel adventure in Charles River Co (later called York County) from the river up to the woods between Salvade Creek and a small creek adjoining Wm Prior and John Broc~~and office BK1 page 481 Virginia)(Nugent).
The well preserved records of York County show him as living there. These records are rather difficult
to read and abstracts by Beverly Fleet have been used.

1646 - agreement with Richard Townshend for work done (F25)
1646 - to be paid by Wm Todd (BF24)
1648 - to pay the children of Elinor Robinson (BF26)
About this time Richard disappears from Yoirk Co records; there is no indication that he died. It seems reasonable to identify him as the Richard found hereafter in Northern Neck of Virginia. First reference to his being there is in 1650 as headright of Mrs Frances Townshend's widow. ~ugent) She is the widow of Richard Townshend of York with whom Richard Wells made the agreement in 1646. Frances Townshend's patent was for land in Northumberland County. August 1, 1653 Richard Wells patented 500 acres Notherumberland County S side Anneslies Creek, 300 of which was an assignment for George Day executor of Wm Louedon (8 june 1653) and 200 for headrights of Jon Hughes, John Hawkins, Simon Morris and Ellen Wilson. (Nugent)
The headright of Richard Wells was used by several [people during these years. It was probably this same man in all or most cases. Much land was being taken up, dropped, exchanged and what-not at this time and headright righats passed in many ways from man to man. There is no indication in this that Raichard Wells was associated or even known by these men who used his headright.

Notes for Humphrey Wells Sr:
Humphrey Wells as a planter and warehouse owner. He was a member of St. Luke's Parish Church io Queen Anne's County, Maryland which was the Church of England.
Except for mention in will Talbot Co., Humphrey is found in Q.}V Co of St Andrew's Chapple Gent. His lands included BATH, BATH's
ADDITION, CALEB'S LOT, CRUMP FANCY, RED LYON PT. PEARCE LAND, BACKIUDGE, THIEF KEEP OUT, WELLS, WELLS'CHANCE, WELLS' Park, and he owned Wells' Warehouse.
1711 With Geo Summerford he was surety for Carpenter Lillington. (Black Book)
1722 Aged 42 (Md Hist Mag 23)
1722 As Humphrey Welles - Justice. (Emory)
1726 He was on commission to divide St Paul's Parish (Arch 1)
1728 This year he witnessed for Thorn Wyatt and for Chas Lowden
1729 Vesteryman at St Luke's when it was cut off from St Paul's whh Jas Gould. Wm Rateliff, Solomon Wright (£mory)
1729 As Justice he gave information re churches. (Arch38)
1732 As justice he fined Wm Montague for killing a deer. During the 1730's the famHy is found at St Luke's. Daughters of Humphrey were married there in 1734 and 1735, In 1736 a son Benjamin of Humphrey and Elizabeth was baptized and died in 1738; and in 1737 a daughter Margaret baptized. Note: The births of the two children raise a probeim since they seem too young for this Humphrey. Certainly this man had a wife Elizabeth (named in his will). His son Humphrey, also living in the neighborhood at this time, had a wife Sibella - or IsabellL Isabella might be given as Elizabeth of course; but Sibella's son Benjamin born 1737 was certainly alive laten Therefore, it seeems that the young children must be of this Humphrey and Elizabeth, and she no doubt a younger second wife. (DJP's Note: perhaps but yet it is possible she was not a second wife, reseach needs to be done on this aspect of the matter.)
1748 He witnessed deed of his brother Richard to his son (which mentioned his own adjoining land.)
1749 Tobacco Inspector at his landing...near church landing at Collins' Mill. (Arch 44 and 46)
(Probably the landing for tobacco inspection called 1750 of Humphrey Jr -(Black Book)( and inherited by his son.)
1750 Will; witnessed by Wm Pryor, Wm Benton, Benj Gould. He names wife Elizabeth, brother Richard, Children: George, Elizabeth (wife of Philip Davis), Mary (Christopher Spry) and her children Humphrey and George,
Katherine ($ath.Cleaves) and chrn. He also names his daughter-in-law Sybella mother of grandson John (widow of his son, Humphrey) and
Humphrey's sons Humphrey, Benjamin and John.

She died on 23 Feb 1759 in Queen Anne's County, MD.

Edit note: William born 1756 died young. According to Vonnie Crider it was not unusual for parents to name a second child the same name as a sibling that died young. This William was in the Revolutionary War and Vonnie refers to him as the Rev. War Vet. to distinquish him from other William Spry's. Enlisted from Chester Hundred, Queen Anne's County, MD, Jun 1776. Also served "different tours" as a Minute Man in 1778 and 1779.
Moved to Pike County Twp, Knox County, Ohio.
Notes from Toby Dills:
It would also help to answer my questions (about the brothers of William and their wives) if we also knew for certain the wives of William Spry's brothers, Thomas (a brother for certain, he is mentioned in William's pension abstract) and Benjamin (probably a brother, based on a close association with the other two during their migrations).
Thomas was married twice for certain and based on birthdates of his children, probably three times (1. Elizabeth, surname unknown; 2. unknown; & 3. Henrietta Mayer who as a widow later married his nephew Samuel Spry)
Benjamin was married to a woman named Elizabeth, surname unknown to me.
The placement of William, Thomas and Benjamin within the family of Thomas and Catherine Wells Spry (m. 12/24/1747) is largely based on the use of 'Wells' as a middle name in the families of descendants of Benjamin and Thomas. However if one examines which families used the 'Wells' middle name, all of the descendants of Thomas who used it were also descendants of Benjamin, so if Benjamin's wife Elizabeth were a Wells, then the main reason for placing the three brothers in the family of Thomas and Catherine Wells Spry disappears. In this case these three could just as easily be placed in the families of the elder Thomas's brothers William (who m. Ruth McConniken Dec 17, 1743) or John (who m. Mary Massey Oct 11, 1744).
This elder group of three brothers each inherited 70 acres of "Friendship" plantation from their father. Examination of Queen Anne Co., land records to determine the fate of "Friendship" plantation would probably be quite revealing.
More notes from Vonnie: Much of what we know of his family is from his Revolutionary War pension abstract (1). He, his brother Thomas and another probable brother Benjamin, moved from MD to Washington Co., PA, probably between 1786 [when William's daughter Elizabeth was born in MD and 1787 [when Thomas's son William was born in PA (5)] and later Knox Co., OH.
Some sources (e.g.3) show an additional son named William Spry, Jr., b. 1787, in this family. The following facts lead me to believe that this William Spry Jr. is in actually a son of William's brother Thomas:
This family already has a son, Samuel probably born in 1787.
The family of William's brother Thomas also has a William Spry, b. __ 37. It is probable that Thomas's son William would be known as William Spry Jr. considering the fact that the families of Thomas Spry and William Spry Sr. [this one] remained closely associated during their migrations.
iii. Both of the Williams born in 1787 are said to have married a Sarah Spry, dau. of Benjamin Spry.
iv. A list of William Spry's children, including deceased ones, was given in his pension record (1). A William Spry was not mentioned in this list.
The placement of this William as a child of Thomas and Catherine Wells is based on circumstantial evidence discussed on his supposed father Thomas Spry's card. Davis on the other hand has suggested he and therefore Thomas Spry his brother were sons of William and Ruth McConniken Spry (2). As questions remain regarding the proper placement of William Spry and a number of other Spry family members who migrated to other areas after the Revolution, four generations of the Maryland Spry family members of all known lines are included in this compilation.

This is from the History of Knox County, Ohio compiled by N. N. Hill, Jr., published by A.A. Graham & Co. of Mt. Vernon, OH, in 1881:
Speaking of Pike Township, "The first election was held at the house of Michael Harter, June 26, 1819, but as no records have been preserved the names of the officers elected cannot be given. The entire number of voters in the township in 1822 was nineteen. Their names were John Arnold, Robert Kennedy, Jacob Swartz, Thomas Elwell, William Wright, Aaron Wilson, John Scoles, William Smith, Thomas Scoles, Andrew Scoles, George H. Scoles, Phillip Armentrout, Benjamin Austin, John Butler, WILLIAM SPRY, Francis Popham, David Holloway, John Gordon, and Cyrus McDonald." (p. 576)
I thought someone might be interested in this bit of history. William served in the Revolutionary War from Chester Hundred in Maryland, later migrating to Washington County, PA, and then on to Ohio. His will was filed June 23, 1836, in Knox County, OH. I have a copy of that. William was the brother of my great-great-grandfather, Thomas Spry.
I don't know if this will be meaningful to anyone, but--like Sandra Vann--I think we could do more with this site if we just would! I was interested in the Lodman Spry cemetery records from Polk Co., Iowa, and hope to try to find this Spry cemetery sometime when I go to visit my 92-year-old aunt, Cecelia Spry Hypes, who lives in West Des Moines. She told me that, many years ago, someone asked her if she was related to the Sprys of that area and she said she guessed she wasn't--or at least she didn't know. Communications were difficult then....but we can do better now.
Happy Spring, everyone!

Notes for Thomas Spry:
Little is known of Thomas Spry at this time. Research done by Col. Joseph Reichel for “Spry Sprouts” shows that three Spry men left Maryland in the early l780s, after the Revolutionary War, and headed for Western Pennsylvania. They were William, Thomas and Benjamin. It is not known if they traveled together or separatly. William and Thomas were brothers, but it has not been proven yet if Benjamine was also a brother. Available records show that it is a plausible possibility. They lived in the same region (Hopewell Township and seem to have had very close ties.
All three Spry men were established in Washington County, Pennsylvania by 1790, and can be found recorded in the first census of the United States as heads of family.
Nothing is known concerning the parentage of these men, a good guess would place them in the family of Thomas and Catherine (Wells) Spry.
Lt. Cot Reichel has told the story of William Thomas and Benjamin very well. Research is still going on, and this is the updated story of Thomas as near as can be determined from the facts available at this time, plus a little conjecture that seem to fit the facts.
Thomas was the brother of William, a Veteran of the Revolutionary War, and was born approximately in 1760 in Queen Ann’s County, Maryland. He married Elizabeth (last name unknown), in Maryland, as his first son was born there. He was established as head of household in Morgan Township, Knox County, Ohio in 1820, as recorded in Knox County, Ohio Census. Presumably his wife died, as he married Henrietta Myers 24 Sept.. 1830.
His will was written 2 April 1833. Previous researchers assumed he died that same year. However there are some discrepancies as to probate. Ohio Will Book lists probate as 1839, with 2 settlements. Probate Court Records Dept. sent a copy of will, but said probate records were too faded to read. Tax records show he paid tax in 1837; and Land records show that Thomas deeded land to Elizabeth Sayer in Oct. 1838. One settlement of his will was found in the Latter Day Saints Family Library Records dated 1839. It seems reasonable to say He did not die in 1833, as assumed. So far it has not been discovered who Elizabeth Sayer was.
The only children named in his will were Benjamin, William, Sally and Thomas Jr., an infant under 2 years of age. His wife, Henrietta was also named. The families of Benjamine, William, and Sally have been recorded. Nothing has been found on Thomas an infant under 2 years of age. We did find an infant of about 2 or 3 named. Thomas Spry having died of Pneumonia, while searching for Thomas’ exact death date, with no parents named. nor an exact date. So we are assuming the child died, As Henriette remarried in in 1846 and sold the land that was left to her and Thomas Jr. Henrietta married Samuel Spry; Who could have been a relative of Thomas, possibly a nephew, as she was much younger than Thomas. We are hoping to continue research on this, and maybe can find some answers to many questions our research has raised. Samuel was named as Elias’ Father on his death certificate. But Elias was born in 1834. This was after Thomas’ will was written, but before he died; and 12 years before Henriette married Samuel. There are still many questions to be answered.

He married Ida Mae Carley, daughter of Clinton Leman Carley and Emma Fidellia Lewis on 21 Nov 1899 in Atlantic, Cass Co, IA. She was born on 10 Sep 1879 in Clay Co., MO. She died on 12 Jun 1920 in O'Neill, Holt Co, Nebraska, USA.
Notes for Marion Wilson Spry:
Marion was the 4th son of Elias and Emily Rose Lambert Spry of Cass Co., Iowa. He was born near Lorah, Iowa on May 1, 1878. He worked as a farm hand until he met and married Ida Mae Carley on November 21, 1899, in Atlantic, Iowa. Ida Mae was born to Clinton and Emma Fidelia Carley, in Clay Co., Missouri September 10, 1879/1880.
They had 9 children. The first 4 were born in Iowa. Emily on August 16,1900; and Gladys on February 25,1902 were born on a farm near Anita, Iowa. Cecil on April 7, 1904 and Floyd on June 5, 1907 were born on a farm near Wiota.
The family moved to O’Neill, Nebraska in 1909. Relocated to a farm near Phoenix, about 18 miles North of O’Neill 4 years later. They bought this farm in 1914. Five more children were born to them Violet July 31, 1909; Roy on May 8,1912; Gale on January 25,1916; Clayton on July 3,1918 (who died May 23, 1919 of pneumonia. and Leland born March 17, 1920.
During their years at Phoenix Marion became a well respected and prominent member of the community. He was a gentle, soft spoken man, with the strength of his convictions; slow to anger, but not afraid to stand up for his beliefs. He was consulted on what was taking place in the community, and as we understand rode with the Posse, as well as being instrumental in setting up the Phoenix Cemetery. He was always ready to help his neighbors and family as much as possible. In 1912 a cyclone went through the Opportunity and Phoenix area. As usual the family memories, and different documentation differ on minor points. There are 2 newspaper articles, funeral home records, and the stories told in the Spry and Carley families. Basically we have determined that the worst damage was done at Opportunity, where Ida Mae’s brother, Robert Ord, lived with his family. Opportunity was just a few miles to the West of Phoenix. Roberts house was picked up, carried a short ways with the family still in it, and set down again. Robert, his wife and 5 children tried to run to the potato cellar. They were picked up and carried away again. Robert Ord and Robert Jr. (under two years of age) were hit by debris, and Robert was knocked unconscious, while Robert Jr. was very badly injured. The 4 year old girl was pulled away and carried about a 1/2 mile. Mrs. Carley managed to gather the other 4 children and get to the celler. After the storm had abated the little girl was seen by a neighbor where she had been set gently down on a small hill, still clinging to her pet pig and dog. She was unharmed except for very minor bruises, caused by the hail. The little boy, Robert Jr. died 3 days later from his injuries. Robert Ord had a sever head wound and a broken back. The farm was completely destroyed. Besides what physical help he could give, Marion arranged for and paid for the little boys funeral.
The area of Opportunity Phoenix seems to have been plagued with superstition. Most of the stories were of mysterious lights. They appeared to be following the fence posts and dancing across the fields. There was a newspaper article telling these stories published in the 1980s. The stories didn’t seem to be happening at that time, but had been numerous and prominent enough to survive and interesting enough to have been written up as having happened in the past. We grew up hearing these stories from our parents and Grand parents. The one story we heard in connection with Marion was when he was riding with the Posse, who was looking for a horse thief. When they found him, someone had hung him on the framing of a bridge in the area. The Posse cut him down to give him a proper burial. When he fell into the water, Marion reached down to pull him out, with his riding gloves still on. When he got the man up on the bank, Marion’s glove was missing, and never found. It was said that the horse thief haunted the bridge. Many people claimed they had seen him still hanging there.
Ida Mae died June 12, 1920 of complications of surgery, about 3 months after Leland was born. Marion did his best to raise the children and keep the farm, with the help of the children. The best we can piece the story together now; By 1930 the depression had set in and the farm was no longer paying for itself. Marion left the children that were still at home to try and keep the farm together, while he went to O’Neill to find extra work. We cannot be sure how many children were still at home at that time. All had married except Roy age 18, Gale, 14, and Leland 10. We know that some of them lived at the farm for a few years after they married, but have no facts on who or how long.
On Aug. 19, 1931 Gale went to feed his horse. The horse was either stung by a bee or bitten by a sweat fly, and kicked out catching Gale in the upper stomach and lower chest area. He died of his injuries the next day.
By 1936 things had deteriorated to a point that they had to sell the farm and moved into O’Neill, where Marion worked for Emmit Crabb and Ray Calvert at their service stations.
In 1946 he moved to Bellingham Washington with his son Roy. They located near his daughter Violet, who had moved out there a few years earlier. In 1948 he broke his hip while fishing, and moved to a nursing home in 1950. He passed away from a 2 week illness on April 23, 1958 and was buried in Phoenix cemetery next to Ida Mae, Clayton and Gale.

He married Ann Elbert circa 1782. (Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin)
Moved with his wife to Berkley County, VA, to NY State, circa 1799 and then to Ohio by 1812. (Elsie Davis )
Notes and sources from Elsie Davis: There is a possiblity of two other daughters, one who married "W. Litten" and a Sarah Anne Spry, who married a "Sounderland," but no marriage records nor proof of either has been found. Might have been born between 1801-1811.

Elias Spry, Son of Thomas and Henrietta Spry, was born October 22, 1834 in Knox Co., Ohio. As a young man, he worked as a hand on the farm of Daniel Lambert. He was considered a top hand and could, and did receive the highest wages.
On August 28, 1856 Elias married Emily Ross Lambert, Daniels daughter. They were married by Reverend Joseph Wolf, in Knox Co., Ohio. This couple was blessed with eleven children, Three of which were born in the State of Ohio. Daniel Thomas, born June 8,1857; Clarance Adelbert (Del) born Aug. 15, 1858; and Alice R. born November 25, 1859. In the fall of 1860, the family moved to Illinois. On January 12,1863, a daughter, Amanda E. was born.
On August 15, 1862 Elias enlisted into the Union Army. His Civil War papers did not agree as to where he enlisted, it was either Bernadotte, Lewiston, or Pleasants Illinois.
He enrolled in Co. I, 103rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry as a private. He was stationed at Camp Sherman, near Mepengers Landing, Big Black River, Mississippi. He saw action in the area between Vicksburg and Jackson. “on or about the 28th day of July 1863 while on the march from Jackson as artillery guards back to Camp Sherman all in the state of Mississippi, said claimant (Elias) ,was affected with sunstroke so as to become unfit for duty, and remained sick and unfit for duty until about the first of Sept.. when cool weather set in. “The above statement is made from personal knowledge as I was with the company at the time said disability occurred.” signed by: Samuel H Brown, Late Captain, Co. I, 103rd Reg. Ill. Inf. Vol. Elias’ superior officer at Camp Sherman.
The following is an excerpt from a document from the Adjutant Generals office, dated Dec.
11 1880. “On the Muster roll of Co. I of that regiment, from Muster in Dec. 3 1,1863, he
(Elias) is reported present. Name does not appear among absentees on return for July ‘63. the
Company was stationed at Camp Sherman, near Mepengers Landing, Big Black River,
Mississippi in July 1863. Mustered out with Co. June 1865. He was on duty as a cook from June
11,1863 to Aug. 12,1863 when he was detailed as cook in hospitals. No evidence that he was
disabled by sunstroke.” Signed by J.P. Martin, assistant Adjutant General.
Notes from Military file indicate that May & June 1863 Elias was in the Guard House in Jackson Tenn. Feb. 7, 1863. “Detailed as Capt. cook Jan ‘64 was left in camp at Scottsboro, Ark. Feb. 11, 1864 to Aug. 19, 1864, in Georgia stated he suffered a slight head wound.

Elias is described as follows: 6 ft. 1 in. tall; fair complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. He was described as a stout and hearty man prior to his service. Elias was honorably discharged from the service on June 2 1,1865 in Louisville, Ky. or June 30 Chicago, Illinois. Pension and military papers do not agree.
One other child, a daughter, Ida M. was born in Illinois on June 6,1866. In 1867 the family moved to Appanoose County, Iowa. Then in 1868, the family moved to Cass County, Iowa. moved to their home place nine miles from Atlantic, Iowa, where their son Alva was born and died at the age of one month and 25 days. April 29, 1870 Charles Marion was born.
In August 1871 Elias incurred an injury to his left hand, that apparently was of a permanent nature. The following is an excerpt from a statement made by Elias to a Notary public, no name given:
“He incurred injury to left hand under the following circumstances; was helping in construction of Joseph Northgraves flouring mill, was sitting astride of a beam up from the ground helping to get the large upright shaft in position when a steel key slipped from its place and the shaft and coupling dropped and pinned his finger to the beam above mentioned.
On May 27, 1873 Blanch E. was born. Bertha A was born on May 7,1875. On May 1,1878 Marion Wilson was born. on Jan.5,1880 Oliver L. was born.
By 1886, Elias was described as suffering from rheumatism, disease of the heart, diabetes ,and deafness in both ears; also the injured left hand. He was no longer able to make a living by manual labor. During harvest he had to trade labor with neighbors due to the fact he could not work in the heat. He was able to drive the reaper in harvest, and measure grain in threshing. These abilities were as stated by his neighbors and friends.
Emily Ross died on May 20,1905, after 6 months of illness, which was a complication of heart, stomach and lung trouble. 2 years later Elias married Sarah Jane Smith Lambert on May 1 1907. She was the widow of C.T. Lambert - Emily Rose’s brother.
Elias died June 13, 1909. Sarah Jane died June 27, 1918 in Lorah, Iowa.

He evidently married and had on son. His estate was distributed 28 May 1772. Francis Rochester and John Hawkins were sureties. The widow received her thirds and the residue went to an unnamed son. (Balances of Final Distribution, Liber: 6:119)

Jehu Spry was b. 6 Aug 1751 and d. after 20 Dec 1798. He inherited "Edinborough" from his father. (Elsie Spry Davis) suggests he later changed his name to John and that as John he sold property inherited by Jehu in the 1790s just before he and his wife Ann left Maryland).
